MADISON, Wis. -

Police said a Madison police officer recognized a suspected purse thief on the street and arrested him Friday afternoon.

The Madison Police Department said a woman's purse was stolen from a Verona Road laundromat on Dec. 30.

According to the report, police had surveillance images of the thief.

On Friday at about 2:30 p.m., an officer on routine patrol downtown spotted 18-year-old Demetrius Smith on State Street, police said.

The officer recognized Smith as the alleged thief in the purse theft surveillance photo, according to the report. Smith was wearing the same distinctive clothing that the thief was wearing when the purse was taken.

Police said Smith was taken to Dane County Jail and charged in connection with the case.
