An officer in Mount Pleasant narrowly escaped injury by jumping into his police van as a car careened directly toward him.

Authorities saID the motorist sideswiped the driver's side door of the van, destroying it. The officer was able to grab the van's steering wheel and pull himself inside as the car veered toward him. He was not hurt.

The officer had responded to an assault report about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when the incident happened. The striking car fled the scene. Police are looking for the driver of a dark sedan.
