Over the course of the last week, I've received the same "PG&E Statement" email from three separate viewers. It's interesting in that PG&E is Pacific Gas and Electric which operates on the west coast, providing utility services primarily in California.
That's a long ways away from Wisconsin, leading these folks to worry that people would see this bill for "$559.7" and confuse it with MG&E, Madison Gas and Electric, which provides the same service here in south-central Wisconsin.
While we were out shooting a story with Dr. Marty Smith, who was one of the people who received this scam email, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection issued a consumer alert warning residents about this scam. (http://datcp.wi.gov/news/?ID=1005)
MG&E is aware of this as well and states on its website that it "will not ask for payment or personal information via email." (http://www.mge.com/safety-outages/home/mge-employee-id.htm)
We'll have more on this story on News 3 at 6, but for now, here's the email in question posted below.
Have a great weekend.
