The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning about scammers getting control of computers after two victims stepped forward.

The victims told investigators they were called by someone claiming to be from Microsoft saying they needed to do some work on the victim’s Windows computer. The scammer asks for permission to run a diagnostic test while talking to the victim over the phone.

The scammer gets access to the victim’s computer and personal information. In one case, the scammer used the computer’s camera to take a picture of the victim.

Investigators ask that citizens be cautious with email, telephone, or door-to-door solicitations that they have not initiated, and to never give solicitors access to personal information.

An Internet and Technology Safety presentation will be held May 12 at 6 p.m. at the Mazomanie Community Center on Brodhead Street. Those interested in attending are asked to call the Mazomanie Police Department at 608-767-2762.
