MMSD announces new Strategic Framework for progress
Framework will focus on day-to-day work of teaching, learning
Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham announced a new Strategic Framework with board of education members, educators and community members Thursday at Leopold Elementary School.
MMSD’s Strategic Framework will guide the district’s work move ahead and defines the district’s core values, theory of change, focus for schools and priorities going forward, according to a release.
“Our framework starts with a simple but bold vision – the every school is a thriving school that prepares every student for college, career and community,” Cheatham said in the release. “From now on, we will be incredibly focused on the day-to-day work that will make that vision a reality.”
Cheatham said the district wants to make graduation rates the best they can be and to have more alternatives for students to help them stay in school.
The framework focuses on the day-to-day work of teaching and learning and includes several key components, according to the release.
First, as the driving force of progress every school will design a targeted School Improvement Plan aimed at meeting goals specific to their needs, according to the release. Schools will also focus on great teaching by planning instruction aligned to standards, delivering instruction that meets the needs of all learners, and monitoring student progress using data.
The last framework component will have the district focusing on five crucial areas that will ensure schools can do their best work for children, according to the release. Those five areas include coherent instruction, personalized pathways, family and community engagement, thriving workforce and accountability.
Cheatham worked with a team of 60 educators to develop the framework after meeting with every school, families and community members in her first two months as superintendent, according to the release. The team also used recommendations from a transition team of national experts.
“Many districts create plans at central office and implement them from the top down. Instead, schools will become the driving force of change in Madison,” Cheatham said. “Rather than present our educators with an ever-changing array of strategies, we will focus on what we know works – high quality teaching, coherent instruction, and strong leadership – and implement these strategies extremely well.”
Cheatham said the district has a lot of things working it its favor, including great community partners and parent involvement.
“I think that’s been a really wonderful and pleasant surprise. That’s why I keep saying we have all the ingredients to be successful. I don’t think I quite realized how strong those partnerships are as I was entering into the district. So it was a major asset to us,” Cheatham said.
