Officials probe how dead toddler got in trunk
2-year-old boy, missing since Tuesday evening, found dead in Polk County
At Thursday’s news conference, a sheriff’s deputy said he wishes searchers had forced open the trunk where Isaiah was found dead but they didn’t have access to the Chevy Impala’s keys.
A deputy found the body of 2-year-old Isaiah Theis in the trunk of a car at his parents' home near Centuria Wednesday night. The father repairs cars there and the car belonged to a customer.
Polk County Chief Deputy Steve Moe tells reporters investigators didn't have access to keys to the cars. He says they had presumed the boy wandered off Tuesday night, which he had a tendency to do, and that all the customers' cars were locked.
“I was quite surprised. I was operating under the belief there was no access to those vehicles and finding out later there was,” said Moe.
Moe declined to speculate how Isaiah ended up in the trunk. He says the autopsy is being expedited but he doesn't expect results Thursday.
Isaiah’s parents are reportedly cooperating with investigators who won’t say whether his death is accidental or criminal.
The community of Centuria started its grieving process with two vigils Thursday night.
