Mining company expected to finish test bores
Mining company expected to finish Wisconsin test boring this week
A company looking to dig a huge iron mine just south of Lake Superior is expected to finish exploratory drilling within days.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials said Gogebic Taconite is expected to finish its eighth and final test hole by the end of the week.
The next step for Gogebic Taconite will be removing larger rock samples from five sites in the mine area. The DNR hasn't granted a permit for that process yet. Agency officials say they want more details on the plan.
The mine has been a flashpoint of contention for conservationists. Gogebic Taconite deployed armed guards at the site last week after protesters wrestled a camera away from an employee in June. The guards were removed on Wednesday because they lacked the proper state license.
