Man with gun arrested at Elver Park celebration
Police say man has gang ties
A Madison man with alleged gang ties was arrested after police said they found a handgun in his pants during a fireworks celebration.
The Madison Police Department said officers in its Crime Prevention Gang Unit spotted a wanted man near the tennis courts at Elver Park on Tuesday night.
The park at 1250 McKenna Boulevard was hosting a fireworks display event and the officers were on duty as part of the law enforcement help.
One officer recognized a man, Rashon Howard, who was wanted on multiple warrants.
Police said 27-year-old Howard has been known in the past to have gang ties.
Officers attempted to take Howard into custody on unrelated warrants and experienced some minor resistance, according to police. The report said an officer found a Ruger .22 caliber handgun and ammunition in Howard's waistband.
Police said Howard is not allowed to possess firearms due to a previous felony conviction.
Howard was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and unrelated warrants, according to the report.
