MADISON, Wis. -

A report of a man with a gun downtown turned out to be a Madison man returning home from hunting, an official said.

University of Wisconsin-Madison police sent an alert Saturday at 10:13 warning students and staff to avoid the 600 block of West Mifflin Street due to a search for a man with a gun. The Madison Police Department said it had received multiple reports of a man walking on Bedford Street with a shotgun.

City of Madison police Lt. Stephanie Bradley Wilson said police found the man, who was returning home from hunting and was walking from his parked vehicle to his home with an uncased shotgun. She said there was no danger.

"Just a guy trying to get back to his apartment with his shotgun that was uncased," Wilson said.

The UWPD alert had said the man was wearing a camouflage vest and camouflage face paint.
