Officials said a 19-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a semi on Interstate 39 Wednesday morning.
State Patrol Sgt. Adrian Logan said Sean Clarke Odegaard of Brooklet, Ga., was driving northbound on I-39 at about 10:45 a.m. when he pulled onto the shoulder at mile marker 165 near Milton. State Patrol said Odegaard was stopping to pick up a piece of luggage lying in the road.
Odegaard got out of his SUV, went into the roadway to get the bag and was struck by a semi, according to the report.
The semi, driven by 54-year-old Charles Gresham of Boone, Ark., was not able to stop, officials said. The semi and Odegaard came to rest on the shoulder of the northbound lanes.
Logan said Odegaard was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville for life-threatening injuries.
Gresham was wearing his seat belt and was not injured in the crash, the report said.
State Patrol said traffic was backed up about a mile during the crash, but the lanes were cleared by about 1 p.m.
