MADISON, Wis. -

An Eagle Heights resident lost $4,320 to a phone scam, according to a release from University of Wisconsin police.

Police said the man received a call from a man who identified himself as Jimmy Arthur from the Federal Tax Department who was calling from Delaware phone number. The caller said there was a warrant out for the man’s arrest because of $1,320 in unpaid state taxes and that if he hung up, authorities in Madison would arrest and deport him.

The victim told police he was then transferred to a woman who told him to withdraw money from ATMs, purchase pre-paid cash cards at convenience stores and give them the numbers on the cards. Once he paid the amount they said he owed, they told him he needed to pay another $3,000 to clear up the warrant.

Police said they believe the call came from overseas.

Police remind residents to never give out personal information over the phone and that the IRS and other government agencies will never call you and require you to provide payment over the phone.
