A Minnesota man died in a crash Sunday afternoon outside of Portage, according to a news release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said 41-year-old Robert Anthony Koy, of Winona, was driving a 2003 Oldsmobile eastbound on Highway 33 east of Interstate 90/94 at around 2:45 p.m, when he made a U-Turn on the highway.
He was then hit by a 2007 Jeep headed east on the highway, driven by a 27-year-old man from Eagan, Minnesota, deputies said.
The Oldsmobile driver, whose name is being held pending notification of the family, was taken to Divine Savior Hospital in Portage where he was pronounced dead, deputies said.
Deputies said the 27-year-old man and his female passenger were taken to Divine Savior with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff's Office Lt. Wayne Smith said controlled substance use on the part of the Oldsmobile driver is suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
Highway 33 was closed until around 5:40 p.m. Sunday night while deputies investigated, Smith said.
Deputies said the crash remains under investigation.
