A man who suffered head injuries in a shooting in Madison has died, turning the case into a homicide, according to a release from Madison police.
Police said the victim died Monday night at a local hospital.
Madison police last week released the name of a man sought in connection with the homicide. They are looking for Brandon Crockett, 27, in connection with the shooting Sept. 28 in the 2700 block of McDivitt Road.
Crockett should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information is asked to call 911, according to a release from Madison police.
Detectives said seven people have been arrested on unrelated charges, and they are trying to determine what role, if any, they might have played in the shooting.
Officers recovered more than two dozen shell casings at the scene.
Detectives said there was a personal conflict between the men and that the shooting is not tied to gang or drug activity.
Neither of the men lived in the neighborhood, according to police.
Witnesses reported multiple shots were fired in the area. At least two bullets struck a nearby apartment building, but no injuries were reported inside.
Willie Golden said he was driving down the street moments after the shooting when he was almost hit by a car that was speeding past.
"Everything happened so fast," Golden said.
He swerved to get out the way and saw the victim lying on the ground.
"I saw the guy (lying) there. Initially I thought he got hit by a car. I didn't know anything about a shooting until moments after that. I helped him out while he was (lying) there. I was trying to keep him as comfortable as possible until the ambulance came," Golden said. "Once I realized that he was hyperventilating, breathing hard, breathing fast, first instincts kicked in."
Golden, who is CPR certified, administered CPR before ambulances arrived. Golden said he didn’t know the victim or see the shooter.
Madison police Chief Mike Koval said the shooting was targeted.
“This was not, by any means, random,” Koval said. “There appears to be some sort of pre-existing relationship or knowledge of one another. It was exceeding targeted and obviously excessive on the number of rounds that we are recovering at the scene.”
