A man injured in a single-car crash early Saturday was is suspected of driving while impaired for a fifth time, officials said.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office said at approximately 1:07 a.m., deputies, Verona police and fire departments and Fitch-Rona EMS responded to Range Trail north of Sunset Drive in the Town of Verona for a report of a one-car crash.
A passerby had found a 1989 Oldsmobile Delta 88 in the ditch against a tree, the report said. The witness told officials a man was seen standing near the vehicle bleeding from his face. Before emergency responders arrived, the injured man had fled the scene on foot.
The Fitchburg Police Department sent a K-9 unit to track the man. The driver of the Oldsmobile was located in a heavily wooded area nearby with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff's department said. The driver and sole occupant was identified as Stephen A. Foster, 33, of New Glarus.
The report said Foster had been driving southbound on Range Trail when he lost control of the car coming out of a curve. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a large tree.
Foster was arrested on suspicion of felony fifth offense OWI. He was also cited for operating after revocation, operating left of center, license restriction violation, and not wearing a seat belt.
The sheriff said Foster was taken to UW Hospital.
