A 23-year-old Madison man arrested on suspicion of shoplifting told police the item he was accused of stealing was not in store packaging, so it was OK to take.
The Madison Police Department said it responded to Blain's Farm & Fleet at 2202 S. Stoughton Road Sunday for a report of an agitated man suspected of shoplifting.
Michael Suter set off theft detection devices at 12:45 p.m. when he attempted to walk out of the store and was held until officers arrived, the report said.
Police said Suter was had a laser measurer that had recently been on display in the store. According to the report, Suter told police he took the item because it was not contained within its original packaging and he felt it was a legitimate find. Later Suter reportedly took responsibility for taking the device, according to police.
The man was taken to Dane County Jail on retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia charges.
