MADISON, Wis -

The Madison Mounted Horse Patrol announced the passing of a police horse, Jack, this week.

The department posted the announcement on the Friends of Madison Mounted Horse Patrol Facebook page. In the post, the department explained that Jack was admitted at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine for emergency surgery after colic symptoms became serious. The department wrote that during the surgery, vets determined Jack's condition could not be reversed.

The patrol described Jack as "a very solid and willing police mount" during the years. He was donated to the unit in 2010. His badge was presented by former Madison Police Chief Noble Wray in a ceremony in May of 2013.

If supporters of the mounted patrol want to donate in Jack's name, checks can be made out to "Friends of Madison Mounted Horse Patrol" and sent to PO Box 2367, Madison, WI 53701. The organization also has an online donation option on www.madisonmounted.org. Donations will be used to support the Madison Mounted Police.
