MADISON, Wis. - Music can be a powerful tool.
For the women of Ladies Rock Camp, music has allowed them to step out of their comfort zone and let their voice be heard.
" We have a voice, we have important thoughts, we have things to say and we really find that music is one of the ways we can learn to express ourselves, " said camp director, Halle Pollay.
Ladies rock camp started five years ago with a mission to empower women to create a positive self-esteem through music. In three days students learn the basic foundations of a range of musical instruments and are tasked with performing at the end of the weekend, turning their dreams into reality.
Katherine Orr, a first-time student, says she has wanted to play the drums since she was a teenager, but didn't have the opportunity.
"When I was growing up the only thing that was available for girls and women, was to have songs written about them. So I feel like I had those dreams and there was just really no role models", said Orr.
The camp staff is made up of all women musicians. Students say being surrounded by the all women allows them to really learn how to rock out without being self-conscious of what others might think.
"For me, having a single gender group is important, as it allows me to really be free. And it allows me to let my guard down, my work environment is a really professional environment and here i can just relax," said Liz Petty.
Petty is no stranger to the camp. This is her third time participating in the event. In the past year Petty has composed an entire album, an accomplishment she never dreamed possible.
"If you would've asked me this two years ago, no way! I never even would've thought about it, I had never written a song before."
