LOGANVILLE, Wis. - An elderly woman died in a fire in a four-unit apartment in Loganville Thursday morning, according to the Loganville Fire Department.
The family of the victim said Kay Pierce, 70, lived in the apartment by herself for the last seven years.
Fire chief Kent Westphal said the building on Main Street was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived after being called at 8:35 a.m. Five volunteer fire departments were called to assist.
Fire officials said there was a report of a woman inside the building, and they entered the building twice to find the woman.
Pierce died on the way to the hospital, according to fire officials.
"She didn't even make it to the hospital. She's not suffering anymore, so that's the main part," said Sandy Deakin, Pierce's daughter.
Westphal said neighboring buildings were saved. Neighbors from the three other apartment units in the building were able to escape.
Fire officials said the smoke and flames were just too much to get Pierce out.
"They took a thermal imaging camera. They did the best they could. The first entry team ran out of air in search for her, so they backed out. We had a second team immediately go in," Westphal said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but fire officials said the fire started in Pierce's apartment and she was trapped.
Fire crews were still at the scene battling flames and conducting demolition work at least four hours after the fire.19230222
Officials blocked traffic in both directions on State Highway 23 at State Highway 154 because of the fire.
Pierce's family said she suffered a major stroke last year. They said she loved being outside and waving to people as they passed by.
"She's going to be missed," Deakin said.
