Vos says he's open to tuition tax credits

Idea proposed as alternative to voucher expansion

MADISON, Wis. - Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said he's open to the idea of tuition tax credits for families that send their children to private schools in Wisconsin.

A bill that would do that is being circulated this week in the Legislature and some are looking at it as a possible alternative to Gov. Scott Walker's plan to expand the private school voucher program currently operation in Milwaukee and Racine.

But both Walker and Vos said they are committed to the original plan. Vos said Thursday it's too early in the process to talk about possible compromises. He said he's waiting to see what "all the moving pieces are" before committing to anything.

Republican Senate leaders have said they don't have the votes to pass Walker's plan as introduced.
