MADISON, Wis. - Police have arrested a 15-year-old in connection with a west side shooting that sent a woman to the hospital Friday night.
Madison police said officers responded to a report of a single gunshot on the 1400 block of Theresa Terrace at about 9:44 p.m. Police said the shooting happened outside a home.
First responders found a 29-year-old woman unconscious and not breathing with a gunshot wound to her abdomen.
"At the time our officers arrived, she was not breathing. We have three officers who performed first aid. Two switched off doing CCR, while a third officer held pressure on the wound," said Madison Police Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain.
The woman was likely an unintended target, police said. She had a baby in her arms and two children were standing next to her at the time of the shooting. None of the children were injured.
Officers administered emergency chest compressions and the woman was revived prior to being taken to a local ER, according to a release.
Police said the woman's injuries were life-threatening.
A 15-year-old male was taken into custody Saturday, and neighbors were helpful to investigators and continue to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, officials said.
According to the report, police said the incident does not appear to be random and there is no ongoing threat to the neighborhood.
Police encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department at 608-266-4275, the Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or text "Dane" plus a message to CRIMES.
