JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Rock County Sheriff's Office said deputies arrested a Janesville man on an eighth offense operating while intoxicated charge after he crashed a stolen vehicle early Sunday morning.
Deputies were dispatched at about 12:30 a.m. to a report of an auto theft at 3145 W. Rockport Road.
Dispatch advised deputies that Richard Fox, 49, just stole a maroon 2002 Grand Prix from this home, and that Fox was intoxicated and was last seen driving eastbound on Rockport Road towards Janesville, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office news release.
At 12:42 a.m., deputies from the Rock County Sheriff's Office and Janesville Fire and emergency medical services were dispatched to a single-vehicle traffic crash on South County Highway D near West State Highway 11.
Dispatch received information that the vehicle involved was the stolen vehicle being driven by Fox, and that he left the scene stumbling down the middle of the road, according to sheriff's officials.
Deputies found the stolen vehicle on South County Highway D, in the east ditch.
The vehicle was traveling southbound on South County Highway D when it hit the west side guardrail, then went across the highway and into the east ditch, according to the news release.
Sheriff's officials said Fox was found walking just south of the crash scene on the east shoulder.
Fox admitted to deputies that he took and drove the vehicle involved in the crash, and deputies detected an odor of intoxicants coming from Fox during their contact with him, according to the Rock County Sheriff's Office.
Janesville EMS transported Fox to Mercy ER, where he was treated and released.
Fox was subsequently arrested on charges of operating motor vehicle without the owner's consent, and for his eighth offense felony OWI, and he was transported to the Rock County Jail, according to the release.
Fox will be held for Jail Court on Monday on these charges.
Sheriff's officials said Fox was also issued several citations, including operating after revocation, failure to report a crash and hit and run property on or adjacent to a highway.
