Security officer attacked by alleged shoplifters

Police: Women filled bag with stolen merchandise

MADISON, Wis. - A Boston Store security officer told Madison police he took a punch to the face when he confronted one of two alleged shoplifters at the West Towne Mall store.

The 28-year-old victim told police two women grabbed an empty bag from behind a checkout area Tuesday afternoon and filled it with hundreds of dollars' worth of merchandise.

He said they also took power toothbrushes and tried to return them for cash or credit. He said he blocked the transaction and tried to stop them after they left the store with stolen merchandise.

One of the women, Tara Hatter, 37, of Madison pushed him and punched him, according to the security guard. He was not hurt.

Shoppers directed police to the area in the mall where the security officer was trying to keep the women from leaving, according to police.

Hatter was arrested on suspicion of retail theft, disorderly conduct and on a probation hold.
