MADISON, Wis. - Madison police are continuing to investigate a "violent home invasion" where a pregnant woman was sexually assaulted by several men who forced entry into a home at the end of February, officials said.
The incident happened on Quincy Avenue around 4 a.m. on Feb. 23, according to a release. Police are not releasing the exact location in order to protect the 30-year-old man and woman who were attacked, officials said.
"In this particular case, it's such a tragedy we are really doing everything we can to make sure these people maintain their anonymity," Madison Police Department spokesman Joel DeSpain said. "The people who were victimized are not involved in drugs or criminal enterprise whatsoever. These are good citizens who were victimized in a very heinous way."
Investigators believe the robbers meant to target another residence and hit this home by mistake.
"The people inside were very very innocent people, and the people who got into that home decided to perpetrate crimes even though we believe they knew they were in the wrong residence very quickly," DeSpain said.
Several armed people forced entry into the home, demanded money and assaulted the residents, according to the release. During the 40- to 50-minute home invasion, several suspects repeatedly sexually assaulted the woman, who was six months pregnant.
The two residents were forced to walk to a local business to call 911 after the incident, police said. Several items that were stolen from the property have been recovered.
Michon Thomas, 22, of Madison, was taken into custody on Feb. 23 on a probation violation, according to the release. On Feb. 26, officers and detectives took Kristopher Hughes, 20, of Madison, into custody for a probation violation. With the assistance of other agencies, Efemia Neumaier, 21, of Madison, Eric Bass, 23, of Madison, and DeAndre Mayweathers, 23, of Madison, were taken into custody on March 6 on tentative charges related to this crime.
Investigators said two of the suspects, Demarco Mallit, 22, of Madison and Hughes were observed on video attempting to conceal or destroy property taken during the robbery. As a result, Mallit was taken into custody on a probation violation.
Neumaier faces tentative charges of conspiracy to commit an armed robbery. Mayweathers faces tentative charges of conspiracy to commit an armed robbery. Mallit faces tentative charges of aiding a felon and theft. Hughes faces tentative charges of conspiracy to commit an armed robbery, party to the crime of armed robbery, six counts of party to a crime of first-degree sexual assault and substantial battery while armed.
