Plan to help mental health issues in schools announced

Parisi: School staffs have voiced concerns about support, training

MADISON, Wis. - Dane County Executive Joe Parisi on Monday announced a key provision in his 2014 budget aimed at helping deal with mental health issues in schools.

Parisi said school staffs around the county have voiced concerns that there's not enough support or training to help students suffering from mental illness.

Parisi is proposing the creation of two mental-health, rapid-response teams to work in the Sun Prairie and Verona school districts.

"It's important that we work with the schools, with the families, with the children, to support them in their mental health needs. When mental health crises arrive, it's important that we do this to provide a comprehensive service for our schools and for our young people," said Parisi.

The teams would cost about $90,000 each.

Parisi will outline his full budget plans to the county board Tuesday.
