Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, 7-year-old Lauren she was told she would never walk, but Sunday she proved otherwise.
Lauren is hugged by her brother, Alex, as she crosses the finish line at the Roo Run Run at the Henry Vilas Zoo. She had just completed her first 1/4 mile race.
Crowds gathered along the race course and people were chanting her name, tears were flowing openly as strangers surrounded and encouraged her.
When asked what kept her going when she got tired, "the people cheering me on," she said with a huge smile.
Lauren's mom, Sandy Tierney is the Board President of Gio's Garden, a local non-profit respite care home for children ages birth to 6 years old. It gives parents a safe place to bring their children for a few hours a week, to have a break from the challenges of caring for a special needs child 24/7.
