Madison man loses $4K to phone scam

Police say number linked to previous attempts

MADISON, Wis. - A Madison resident lost $4,000 last month as a result of a telephone scam.

Madison police said the story of fraud is familiar to them. An 85-year-old man received calls from someone claiming to be his grandson, as well as from someone claiming to be the grandson's lawyer.

According to a report, the phony grandson claimed to be in a crash and did not want to inform his parents. The victim wired $2,180 for a fictitious vehicle repair and $1,960 for hospital bills claimed to be incurred by the driver of the other vehicle.

After being called on a third day, the victim told police he nearly sent out an additional $2,000 for supposed bail money but was advised by bank officials to investigate.

The Madison Police Department released the phone number of the fraud perpetrators: 514-365-3558. Police said the number is associated with other scam attempts. The area code is associated with Montreal, Canada.
