JANESVILLE, Wis. - The southbound lanes of Interstate 39/90 were closed in Janesville after a crash involving a semitruck and an army vehicle at the Highway 26 interchange.
The Wisconsin State Patrol reported that the crash occurred at 11:13 a.m. and one lane reopened at 12:40 p.m.
Three vehicles were southbound on I-39 in the right lane when a car merging onto Interstate 39 from Highway 26 came to a stop at the top of the ramp, according to a release.
Officials said Michael D. Rynearson, 21, driving a military Humvee, hit his brakes, causing Eluterio Medina, 30, driving a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT), to hit his brakes and swerve to the left.
Leonard L. Cleveland, 55, was driving a wrecker behind the military vehicles and also swerved into the left lane where contact was made between the HEMTT wrecker and the semitrailer, according to the release. The semitrailer then went into the bridge wall on the left shoulder.
The HEMTT wrecker swerved to the right and ran over the bridge wall on the right shoulder, going through the wall, knocking debris down onto Highway 26 northbound, according to the release.
Officials said the falling debris damaged a vehicle on Highway 26.
Two occupants of the HEMTT wrecker were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.
One southbound lane was closed until about 8:15 Thursday night because crews had to pour new concrete to replace the barrier that fell.
Crews were directing traffic to take an alternate route and take southbound I-39 at mile post 163 to westbound Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 51, according to the release.
There was substantial damage to the right shoulder of the bridge, officials said.
State Patrol officials said a part of a concrete barrier fell onto Highway 26 closing one of the lanes. The ramp from southbound Highway 26 to southbound I-39 remains closed for repairs to the bridge.
The crash remains under investigation.
