MADISON, Wis. - Southern Wisconsin is the target of a winter storm that spread snow across the area early Sunday morning.
The winter storm spread snow into southern Wisconsin early Sunday morning. The snow should be heaviest into Sunday morning before diminishing to snow showers and flurries Sunday afternoon.
Strong winds during and immediately after the storm will cause blowing and drifting snow.
Total snowfall amounts still appear to be in the 5- to 10-inch range, with the lightest amounts toward Wisconsin Dells and areas to the northwest.
The city of Madison Streets Division had 32 salt trucks out by 8 p.m. on Saturday and plans called for a possible doubling up of trucks on main streets and calling in additional staff on Sunday.
A snow emergency has not been declared, but could be for Sunday and Monday evenings.
This winter storm will stretch from Texas and Oklahoma to Michigan. Ice storm warnings are in effect for eastern Oklahoma, with winter storm warnings issued from Missouri through our area.
By 11 p.m. Saturday, nearly 500 flights into or out of U.S. airports had been cancelled and some 7,000 had been delayed, aviation tracking website FlightAware.com reported.
Travelers likely avoided the worst if they left or arrived in the Midwest by midday Saturday. But by afternoon, roads in many areas became slick and flight cancellations and delays started mounting.
On the warm side of the storm, there will also be adverse weather. Flood watches for heavy rain have been issued from northeastern Texas to northern New York state. There is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms and the threat for a few strong tornadoes on Saturday in an area from New Orleans to Memphis, and severe thunderstorms may be possible on Sunday from southern Alabama to Washington, D.C.
If you plan to travel this weekend by air or by car through much of the eastern United States, make sure to monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to change your travel plans.
