VERONA, Wis. - Just about all the food on grocery store shelves are required to include a nutrition label, but sometimes it takes a little more than just scanning the ingredient list to make the healthiest choice.
The task of loading up the Zak family shopping cart doesn't entirely belong to mom Kimberly Zak.
The path to healthy food is a family affair, with her children, 6-year-old Adam and 4-year-old Kate, taking active roles in making smart food choices.
Kimberly Zak and her two children play a vital role in manning the cart at the grocery store.
"But don't get me wrong, it's a treat to come by myself," Kimberly Zak said. "It's a treat to be able to grocery shop by myself, too. Every once in a while that happens."
But Zak says these family trips to the store serve as moments when everyone learns together and everyone helps each other keep temptations to a minimum.
"Every once in a while, I like an Oreo too," Zak said. "The marketing will pull me in, but for the most part, they know that's a treat and that's not something we have every day."16922788
While making good dietary choices at the store is part of raising health children, Zak said she hopes choices made at the store Tuesday foster even healthier lives down the road.
"It's teaching them what is a healthy choice so that they understand it and when mom and dad aren't there, that they're making that healthy choice," Zak said.
Zak said keeping the children engaged while shopping means giving her children that freedom to make some of those shopping decisions themselves.Dietitians to help shoppers with decisions at grocery store
And for families looking for more tips in the grocery store, Dean Clinic will host Shop with a Dietitian from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Miller and Sons Supermarket in Verona. Dietitians will be placed throughout the store and will be available to give people one-on-one advice.
