Bishop held in fatal pedestrian crash; victim identified

Intersection closed Sunday afternoon

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. - A Lutheran bishop, 59-year-old Bruce Burnside, is faced with two felony charges after Sun Prairie police said he was intoxicated when he hit and killed 52-year-old Maureen Mengelt with his car near the intersection of Highway 151 and 19 Sunday.

Close friend and employer Larry Epstein described Mengelt as an avid runner and good mother.

"She was a good person.  She always loved dealing with people. She could talk to anybody. She was always fun to be around.  I don't remember ever seeing her on a down day. One of those people always in a good mood," said Epstein.

Mengelt worked as a limousine driver for Gallant Knight Limousine.  Epstein described her as an employee others liked to work with and recalled customers requesting her to be their driver.

"We were just in shock, just numb you know, couldn't believe it," said Epstein.

Burnside is still being held in the Dane County Jail and faces the following charges: hit-and-run causing death and homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

Police said Mengelt is said to have been running on the south side of Highway 19 when Burnside hit her.

Church officials are asking for prayers for everyone affected by this tragedy.

"The ministry and work of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin is being conducted by the synod staff and the executive committee of the Synod council, and our primary concern is for the well-being of all who are experiencing this personal tragedy," said Reverend Blake Rohrer, Assistant to the Bishop.

The Mengelt family will hold services later this week.
