MADISON, Wis. - A local Girl Scout troop leader has been removed over questions of how she was managing money.
The Badgerland Council of Girl Scouts confirms they are investigating the Iowa County troop leader and that they have gone to a collections agency for an undisclosed amount of money.
One mom who contacted News3 said her daughter was in the Iowa county troop for a five years, participating in cookie sales and other fundraisers.
She became suspicious of the lack of activities and messages that the troop had no money to the point where the troop couldn't afford badges they had earned throughout the year.
She contacted the state organization in February, who removed the leader a few weeks ago and notified parents.
"Those girls raised all that money and they never got to do anything," said Sam Staskal, whose daughter Layna was in the troop. "I think if there's any money to be recouped, then these kids should have a said in where it goes and what they do with it and they should at least get the badges."VIDEO Badgerland Girl Scouts investigate local troop leader
CEO of the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Badgerland Marci Henderson said the agency is looking into the missing funds.
"We have an investigation underway and we are actively trying to understand where the funds currently are," Henderson said.
Henderson said they have not contacted police because they are working with the troop leader to "understand the situation," but would contact them if they deemed it "elevated to that level."
News3 is not naming the troop leader involved because she hasn't been charged with any crime.
The leader declined an on-camera interview Friday but in a phone conversation maintains that she has done nothing wrong and she is working out any issues with troop finances with the state organization.
