55-year-old man from Frederic dies on Alaska fishing boat

Accident in Cook Inlet kills Wisconsin man; victim's arm caught in anchor chain

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska State Troopers said a Wisconsin man died in an accident aboard a boat in Cook Inlet.

Troopers said 55-year-old Lewis Byerly of Frederic, Wis., on Thursday morning pulled up an anchor with a motorized winch on the fishing boat Anna Lane and his arm became tangled in the chain.

He could not get free and the winch pulled him into the machinery, killing him.

Trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen told KTUU-TV that Byerly was one of two people on the boat about a mile and a half off shore near Ninilchik on the Kenai Peninsula.

The state medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Troopers said they reported the incident to the Coast Guard and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
