LA CROSSE, Wis. - Wisconsin State Patrol said one person has died and at least two other people were injured in a six-vehicle crash that happened at about 7:45 a.m. near mile marker 2 near La Crosse Thursday.

La Crosse County Dispatch asked drivers to avoid I-90 eastbound near mile marker 2 while crews investigate the scene. Traffic on I-90 was diverted near that area.

The crash involved six vehicles, including several cars, a van and a dump truck. The dump truck caught fire and was on top of another car. Tri-State Ambulance told News 8 they transported two poeple - one with life-threatening-injuries and one with non-life-threatening injuries.

Wisconsin State Patrol said its preliminary investigation found that the crash happened as traffic was funneling into the construction zone and the dump truck was not able to slow down in time and ended up running into other vehicles.

Alternate route via WisDOT: Exit 2 eastbound right onto CTH B to STH 53 northbound to I-90 eastbound. WisDOT opened the I-90 westbound lanes at about 9:20 a.m.
