MADISON, Wis. -

The Detroit Lions player accused of making inappropriate comments to the University of Wisconsin-Madison marching band over the weekend has apologized, the team spokesman said Tuesday afternoon.

In a news release at about 1 p.m., Matt Barnhart with the Detroit Lions said Dominic Raiola apologized to marching band director Mike Leckrone over the phone.

In a statement sent Tuesday, Raiola said he was wrong and sorry for how he acted during Sunday's game against the Packers in Green Bay at Lambeau Field.

"My interaction with the Wisconsin Marching Band was inappropriate. I apologize to those I offended along with all of the members of Wisconsin's Marching Band," Raiola said. "I also apologize to the Lions’ organization and my teammates. I understand the standards to which we should conduct ourselves, and my actions Sunday fell dramatically short of those standards."

Raiola also indicated to Leckrone that he would make a significant donation to the Marching Band Fund, which supports Wisconsin's marching band, Barnhart said.
