FITCHBURG, Wis. -

A Fitchburg home and day care were destroyed Saturday due to a fire, according to a release.

Officials responded to reports of a house fire around 8:20 Saturday night at 2741 Jacquelyn Drive, according to the release.

The home is owned by Richard and Mary Ellen Tremelling, who live at and operate a home day care business at the residence, according to the release.

Officials said heavy smoke was coming from the roof and the fire had burned through a portion of the front wall of the home and had extended into the attic when they arrived.

Crews began to try and contain the fire while searching the structure for occupants while police worked with neighbors to try and contact the family, according to the release.

Officials said no one was inside the home and crews managed to contain parts of the fire.

The bedroom and attic areas of the home have extensive damage and there was significant heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the home, according to the release. The structure is valued at $178,200, and damage estimates are expected to be too high.

Officials said they determined the fire started in a front bedroom but an exact cause is still under investigation.
