MADISON, Wis. -

A public listening session will be held as part of the Madison Board of Police and Fire Commissioners search for the next police chief.

In a statement, the board said a public listening session will be held on Oct. 14 in the Madison Public Library downtown branch.

Police Chief Noble Wray will retire at the end of September or early October. Assistant Chief Randy Gaber is leading the administrative staff until a new chief is named.

The board will continue to take comments through October and will distribute questionnaires to police department employees, according to the release. The board will start reviewing applications in November, and hopes to appoint a new police chief in early 2014.
