The drivers involved in a two-car head-on collision were hospitalized Thursday night after a crash in the town of Wingville, authorities said.
The Grant County Sheriff's Department said 52-year-old Kim Cleary of Highland was headed east on Highway 18 in a 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue at about 7:39 p.m. Alan Tinderholt, 61, of Waukon, Iowa, was headed west on the same highway in a 2008 Ford Fusion when the vehicles collided head-on causing "extensive damage."
The sheriff's department said Tindherholt had fallen asleep at the wheel and that Cleary told authorities he had been drinking.
Both drivers were taken to UW Hospital and remained in intensive care Friday morning.
Highway 18 was closed in both directions for about 2.5 hours due to the severity of the crash, according to the report.
The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff said.
