Two major north-south routes on the south side of Madison will be under construction for the next month.
The Dane County Highway Department started work this week on culverts on Fish Hatchery Road south of Irish Road to County M.
The project will close the road from 7 am to 4 pm every day this month. The highway department put up sign boards about the closure last week, but no press release was ever issued to notify the public.
"I think we got it out when we planned to get it out but there may have been some confusion in the fact that we got it out to emergency services and maybe hadn't done a good job getting it out to the press," said Highway Commissioner Jerry Mandli.
The construction also comes at the same time that lanes have been limited on nearby Verona Road, wich Mandli says is a casualty of the long winter.
But he says he hopes it will make things better for commuters in the long run.
"This will help as they get into some of the later stages or the next stages of Verona Road,' said Mandli. "This will provide some alternate routes for people to use."
The county says once the culvert work is done they'll still be doing some work expanding lanes, adding asphalt and working on shoulders. But the road should not close completely anymore after the end of April.
