TOWN OF FULTON, Wis. -

A fire at a popular Rock County bar shut down a major highway and caused many firefighters to respond to the scene Monday morning.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office said firefighters responded to a fire at the Anchor Inn Bar in Newville just before 4 a.m. Monday.

Deputies discovered flames coming from the roof of the bar when they arrived. The Edgerton police and fire departments responded to the fire, along with several other local fire departments.

The fire started in a void space above the kitchen, but the cause of the fire is still undetermined, investigators said.

Police said there is no evidence of a crime being committed, and investigators cannot rule out an electrical issue as the cause.

"There isn’t anything to lead them to believe that there is anything criminal here, but they are not going to be able to say specifically what caused the fire to start," Capt. Todd Christiansen said.

Damage is estimated at between $500,000 and $1 million, which is close to a total loss, deputies said.

Despite the business being almost a total loss, the owners said they plan to rebuild.

The fire caused officials to close down Wisconsin Highway 59 in both directions in order to battle the blaze.
