TOWN OF WESTPORT, Wis. -

The fire chief from the Town of Westport says an apartment building is a total loss after flames engulfed the structure early Thursday morning.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said a call for the structure fire came in just after 3 a.m. Thursday.

The fire happened at an eight-unit apartment complex on Westport Road in the town of Westport. By the time firefighters arrived, officials said one of the building was engulfed by flames.

"It's too early to tell what caused the fire," said Town of Westport fire chief Gary Acker. " It could be smoking materials or faulty equipment, but we don't know for sure."

All tenants of the building were evacuated safely. No injuries have been reported. The Red Cross and the Salvation Army are assisting displaced residents.

Acker said residents will get a chance later today to go back to what's left of the complex to try and find personal items. "There are still some valuable left in the building," said Acker. "We'll let them sift through the wreckage and try and find something."

"Then I expect we'll get the building ready for demolition," said Acker.

The fire is under investigation. There is no damage estimate at this time.
