Madison police are investigating two cases where fake $50 bills were used to pay for products, according to a release.
A Sun Prairie man was given six $50 bills for a laptop he was selling through Craigslist, according to the release.
Officials said the man met the buyer at Marcus Eastgate Cinemas at 5202 High Crossing Boulevard on July 29 around 8:30 p.m.
The buyer said something about catching a movie and left before the Sun Prairie man discovered the bills all had the same serial number and were smaller than real money, according to the release.
Officials said another set of phony $50 bills were passed at the BP gas station at 735 E. Washington Ave. on July 15.
Two of the bills had the same serial numbers and all of the bills didn’t feel like real U.S. currency, according to the release.
The person passing the fake bills is described as a black male, 30 to 35 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. He was last seen clean shaven with short hair and was wearing a blue and white striped shirt.
