Enrollment in Madison’s 4-year-old kindergarten is up almost 7 percent from the previous school year, according to the school district’s most recent enrollment figures.

The Madison Metropolitan School District stated 90 percent of 4-year-olds living in the district are now enrolled in 4-year-old kindergarten.

In 2011-12, 1,789 students were enrolled in 4K.  This school year, 1,914 students are enrolled.

“Starting learning early is key to closing gaps, and this year, our 4K program will do that important work for more students,” Superintendent Jane Belmore said.

The 4K program is in its second year.

The district’s total enrollment is up slightly from 26,650 in 2011-12 to 26,925 this school year, according to district officials.

The district has enrolled between 24,000 and 25,000 students the last 12 years.
