Donna's Best Brownies

There are a lot of brownie recipes but this one has become my favorite. The chocolate chips are divided. Some of the chips are melted in the batter and some are stirred in the batter without being melted.

The frosting is also very good but it is not necessary.

1/3 cup butter or margarine 3/4 cup sugar* 2 tablespoons water 1-1/2 cups chocolate chips, divided 3/4 cup flour 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs** 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, optional

Frosting (Optional) 1/2 cup chocolate chips 1/3 cup fat-free sour cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 7 x 11 or a 9 x 9 inch baking pan. In a small skillet, combine butter, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat and stir to mix. Remove from heat and add 1 cup chocolate chips to skillet. (Set remaining ½ cup of chips aside.) Stir until melted. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Add melted chocolate mixture and stir to mix. Add one egg at a time and stir to mix. Add reserved ½ cup of chocolate chips, vanilla, and walnuts. Stir to mix well. Spoon into baking pan. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes or just until set. Do not over-bake. Cool to room temperature.

*To reduce calories and carbohydrates, use ¼ cup sugar and ½ cup Splenda. The brownies will be drier and more cake-like in texture.

**To reduce calories and cholesterol, use ½ cup Egg Beaters in place of the 2 eggs.

For frosting, melt chocolate chips in non-stick skillet over lowest heat. Combine sour cream and vanilla. Add sour cream to melted chocolate and stir quickly to mix. Spoon over brownies and spread evenly.
