DOJ: Middleton woman sentenced for embezzlement
55-year-old used money to pay personal medical, tax bills
A Middleton woman was sentenced Tuesday to 24 months in federal prison for embezzlement, according to a Wisconsin Department of Justice release.
Brenda Werfal, 55, was ordered to pay more than $1.1 million in restitution, according to the release. She pleaded guilty to the charge Sept. 24.
Werfal was working as an office manager for Specialty Billing Services, according to the release. Since 1993, she was responsible for receiving payments for services provided by doctors employed by Southern Wisconsin Emergency Associates, paying debts associated with those employees and making payroll payments for the employees.
According to a criminal complaint, Werfal embezzled more than $1.5 million from SWEA to pay her personal medical and tax bills.
