MADISON, Wis. -

DNR announced the first hunting mobile app for smartphone users on Wednesday.

In a release, the DNR said the app is meant to combine the traditions of hunting with new technology. The app is complete with GPS maps, safety alerts, registration locations and hunting regulations designed to keep hunters updated.

"They allow people to share messages and their GPS location with designated contacts, to make sure help is at arm's reach," said DNR secretary Cathy Stepp, "As I always say, a safe hunt is a successful hunt."

There is also a trophy case and nature feature on the app. Stepp said in the release, the DNR plans to roll out another app in the spring for the fishing opener.
