The state Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday that it would alter hours for 29 of its locations to an 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. schedule starting Sept. 3.
The new plan eliminates the previous early-open and late-open days, when the 29 locations would open early one day a week and stay open late one day a week.
In a statement, Bureau of Field Services Director Donna Brown-Martin said the change was meant to eliminate confusion for DMV patrons and keep hours easier to remember.
“In the past, they had been staggered to offer a little bit of flexibility later on and earlier times, but we found that was creating some confusion. So to make it easier for customers to remember, we’re making it consistent Monday through Friday,” said Kristina Boardman, Wis. DMV deputy administrator.
The change in schedule adds 1 hour 45 minutes to the weekly hours of operation, according to the agency.
Brown-Martin said services like vehicle registration renewal and some title services are available online, which can save a trip to a service center.
The Department of Transportation also said DMV forms are available free online through wisconsindmv.gov and warned patrons of websites that attempt to charge fees for information and forms.
