MADISON, Wis. -

A Dane County sheriff's deputy was struck in the face with a closed fist while inspecting an inmate's cell Friday morning.

Sheriff’s officials said the inmate, Stephen Woodson, 39, of Fitchburg, struck the female deputy unexpectedly and was locked into his cell after the attack. The deputy was treated on the scene and taken to an emergency room.

Charges of battery by prison and felony bail jumping were added to Woodson's current charges. Woodson is being held $7,540 cash bail for two counts of battery, battery by prisoner, two counts of prisoner throwing bodily fluids, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, felon in possession of a firearm, knowingly fleeing an officer, operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent, hit-and-run and bail jumping.

A Dane County Sheriff’s deputy was also injured on Oct. 25 at the William H. Ferris Center minimum security Huber Work release facility.
