MADISON, Wis. -

Senate Democrats are demanding the Legislature convene immediately to approve upgrades at Wisconsin's largest veterans home.

The push to look into conditions at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King has intensified since the Cap Times published a story in August raising questions about substandard care, medical errors and staffing shortages. The Legislature's audit committee plans to hold a hearing Wednesday to consider launching an audit on the home.

Senate Democrats held a news conference Tuesday to say an audit could take months. They demanded the Legislature convene in extraordinary session to approve $18.5 million in improvements King officials want, including upgrades to fire alarms and the electrical system, new flooring and room renovations.

Republicans control the Legislature. GOP Assembly and Senate leaders didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
