Daytime gunfire prompts school lockdown in Beloit
Police said 2 groups of 3 fired at each other
An exchange of gunfire between two groups of men near an elementary school in Beloit prompted the school to lock down Monday.
Beloit police said they received multiple calls at noon about gunfire in the 1200 block of Copeland Avenue.
They said there were two groups of three men who were about 200 feet apart and firing at each other. Police estimate three to five shots were fired.
All the men ran away before police arrived.
Police said they haven’t identified the shooters and don’t know what prompted the gunfire.
Merrill Elementary school is about one block away from the scene of the shooting. School officials locked the building down when they heard the gunfire.
