LANCASTER, Wis. - A woman was pulled over in Grant County by a man claiming to be a law enforcement officer, according to a release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman told deputies she was driving Thursday night on Highway 11 when at 8:50 p.m. near Sandy Hook Road she was pulled over by an unknown vehicle that had a single rotating red light on the dash.
The driver of the suspect vehicle walked up to the drivers’ side of the woman’s car and asked her if she knew why he was pulling her over, without asking for her license and registration. He told her she had a brake light out, and she told him she didn’t think a brake light was out. When a car approached from the other direction, he told her to have a nice night and walked back to his car, according to the release.
The man is described as white, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, skinny, clean shaved with dark brown hair. He was wearing what looked like a uniform of unknown color with no name tag or patches.
The woman called deputies after arriving home.
Deputies said that while several law enforcement agencies in the area use unmarked patrol vehicles, all are equipped with multiple emergency lights and a siren.
Deputies advise that if a law enforcement officer attempts to make a stop, the first step is to acknowledge the officer's presence by slowing down. Anyone who feels that the situation is not safe to stop or questions the validity of the law enforcement officer is advised to continue a short distance to a safer location to stop as long as you continue driving slowly.
Anyone who questions the validity of the officer may also call 911 to verify.
Deputies said the incident appears to be isolated.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 608-723-2157 or Grant County Crime Stoppers at 800-789-6600.
